PATRICIA J. WALZ, PH. D.
what to expect
The amount of time you will be in the office varies according to the type of evaluation you will be having and will range from 45 minutes to 8 hours. Feel free to call ahead to find out the length of your evaluation. Please be sure to bring a list of your medications (please don't bring your pills), and any glasses or hearing aids you normally use. Also be sure to bring your insurance cards, if you will be using your medical insurance to pay for services. We accept cash, checks, and most credit cards for payment. You may bring one adult with you to the evaluation (DO NOT BRING CHILDREN), although the person you bring along may or may not be able to accompany you into the interview. Our office is handicap accessible with a ramp and handicap bathroom.
Most evaluations consist of two parts; the first part being an interview to gather history and find out how you're functioning. The second part will involve the actual testing which will range from a 10 minute oral test to more complex testing lasting up to 6 hours. For the longer tests, frequent breaks are given. We have a drinking fountain available, but if you need a drink or snack for longer evaluations, feel free to bring something to eat during your breaks. If a family member is allowed during the interview, they will not be allowed in the room during testing. Most tests involve questions and answers, puzzles, and other assessment tools that measure your cognitive (brain) functioning. There is no physical pain involved and no bleeding! Sometimes the testing is frustrating because the goal is to find out what you can do , so you are pushed to the limit. You may also be asked to complete paper and pencil inventories.
Once the testing is complete, Dr. Walz will write a report with the results which will be shared with your referral source. You may also be able to have a report sent to other professionals. You can ask about this when you check in. Sometimes an appointment is made for test feedback and sometimes Dr. Walz will call you with that information, depending on the nature of the evaluation. The length of time for completion of an evaluation is usually 2 weeks.
